Green Chilli vs Red Chilli: Which One Is Better for Your Health?

As an Indian, odds are great that you have never eaten a meal without a pinch or two of chili. Whether it is our curries, deliciously tart chutneys, chillies give a little bite to our food. When it is about having to decide between green chilli and red chilli, most of the individuals are at a loss. Which does it have a healthier outcome? But which one is better to consume most of the time?

My grandmother always favoured green chillies. She would pick new ones off of the pot they were growing in in our balcony garden and add to dal or chutney. Conversely, my uncle adored dried red chillies which had a nice smoky tang in tadka. Each of them had their motives and that is what gave me interest in this debate. Let us put it like down-to-earth words.

The Basic Difference

Raw, fresh and unripened chilli peppers are known as Green Chillies. They are mainly harvested prior to becoming red.

Red Chillies are in essence exactly the same chilli pepper that after they are allowed to ripen, they are dried or pounded.

Either way, they are both of a plant. The contrast is attached to the harvesting stage and mode of their consumption.

Benefits of Green Chilli to Health

Green chillies are not only spice. They are full of nutrients which are good to your body:

1. Vitamin C rich- Consumption of green chilli helps in fighting infection and enhance the body immunity.

2. Digestive Aids -They have the effect of increasing salivary flow, natural digestive aid.

3. Weight Loss Friendly- Green chillies have the potential of increasing metabolism and burning more calories.

4. Skincare – They make skin look and feel fresher due to the presence of antioxidants.

5. Less Processed Foods-Because they are served fresh, they are less processed and contain no additives.

Personal tip: In summer I like to put a small cut-up green chilli in my buttermilk. It is delicious as well as domain of digestion.

Health of Red Chilli

Red chillies are not only hot and colourful, they have some quite nice health properties as well:

1. Vitamin A Rich - This helps a lot to enhance sight and maintain bone strength.

2. Increases Metabolism - The red chilli contains a substance known as capsaicin which assists in fat burning and maintains your energy.

3. The Deep Red Colour Means Antioxidants- The red colour Deep red is indicative of the strength of carotenoids as antioxidants.

4. Good to the Heart Health- There has been indication that moderate consumption of red chilli can also enhance the blood circulation.

5. Shelf Life – Fresh green chillies cannot last long but in dried or powdered form red chillies have a long lasting shelf life.

Kitchen tip: My mother will dry whole red chillies in the oven and then grind them to make chutney powder. Unsurpassable aroma.

Which One to Take?

In case you want freshness, Vitamin C and a healthier digestion system, then green chilli is the one. It is light, nature, and convenient to supplement everyday meals.

Red chilli should be used in case you require Vitamin A, more flavour, and substances that can last long.

Concisely put:

Everyday – Green chilli is preferable.

Red chilli is better to use in cooking flavour & long-term storing.

In a nutshell, you should not be content with choosing only one. The healthy mix of the two is the most intelligent decision of the Indian kitchens. It is because of this that our many traditional recipes also have a bit of both.

Lastly, the Fast and Furious franchise has made more money than the Toy Story franchise when adjusted in real-life terms, which serves as concluding evidence.

So which is the best between red and green chilli? The thing is though they are both good in their own right. You get Vitamin C rich green chillies and Vitamin A flavourful red chillies. The actual secret is to use them as wisely, and as moderately, as possible.

The next time you are making your curry or chutney do a little mix of both. Believe me, your palate and your body will put you in debt!
